Along with our potatoes, Thomas and I grow tomatoes on our balcony every year. And every year, the first winter frost comes before all the tomatoes have had time to ripen.
Luckily, green tomatoes are not only perfectly edible, but can be turned into delicious meals and side dishes in their own right.
One great option for [...]

Homegrown food is great. In a perfect world everybody would have acres of land to grow their own organic, healthy food. But for city-dwellers like me, that’s just not within reach.
I’m not complaining, though – you can fit a lot of growing things onto a balcony!
And while you won’t be able to grow enough food [...]

I think hybrids are evil.
Not hybrid cars, mind you. I’m all for those.
I’m talking about a kind of hybrids that most people are in contact with on a daily basis: Man-made hybrid food plants and their seeds.

Here’s a quick tip that will help you out whenever you’re unlucky enough to burn food in your pan.
First quickly scrape out any burnt bits that come off easily.

Put in a couple of teaspoons of baking soda, give it a quick stir [...]

Plant and care for pollen-bearing plants, preferrably several different types. Bees need [...]

Buzz. Bzzzzz. Buzz!
Don’t worry. I’m not going crazy.
I’m just making a few celebratory sounds in honor of pollinators worldwide.
We are, after all, in the middle of Pollinator Week 2009.
Oh yeah? Who you callin’ pollinators?
Pollinators are all kinds of animals that help move pollen by rummaging in, on or near flowers.
The most well-known pollinator is the [...]

Refrigerators are less energy efficient than most people realize. Their energy efficiency ratings are done under ideal conditions – get a few things wrong and you might end up spending a lot more electricity on cooling your food than necessary.
If you follow the advice in the list below, though, you can be safe in the [...]

Baked potatoes are one of my favorite side dishes, but the time it takes for them to finish baking is not. Especially if they’re properly large baking potatoes.
Which is why I really like this tip:
When preparing your potato for baking, pierce it through the middle with a metal skewer that pokes out on each side [...]
