Greenwashing or actual environmental commitment?

by thomas on June 4, 2009

Shell is running a campaign these days, touting their commitment to environmental issues and helping to “shape the new energy future”.

They are sponsoring the Eco-marathon, an annual race where participants compete by building special fuel efficient vehicles and seeing who can attain the highest average speed over a distance of 10 miles (16 kilometers) while expending as little energy as possible.

As part of Big Oil, Shell doesn’t exactly carry much traction among the green crowd, but at some point I guess it’s a question of adjust or go bankrupt for them, too.

Have a look at the video below and let me know in the comments what you think – is this the voice of genuine concern for the environment or just an attempt at greenwashing?

@everyone: Thanks for commenting! I tend to lean in the same direction as you guys; the message in the video seems like an attempt to portray big oil as having more of a conscience than they really have. Although Shell – and all other oil companies, for that matter – really will have to adjust to a new reality in the coming years, I’m not really convinced about their efforts just yet.

Todays fuel and the careless use of it, can be nothing else but dangerous to the environment. Every attempt to make us believe otherwise – is a big lie. However, there are alternativs growing up, and I hope common sense will win before the crime for profit.

This video sounds like so much hot air to me. It just feels like they are insincere, and saying what the public wants to hear without meaning it. But I hope I`m wrong! It`s great if they want to protect the environment more!
